My friend Kathy invited me up to join her and our friends Shawn, Lizz and Lachlan at her cabin on a small island in Lac la Hache, BC.

It was about a 6 hour drive from Vancouver and I saw parts of the province I’ve never seen.

After stocking up on food at a market in 100 Mile, we drove through the small town of Lac la Hache, put her boat in the lake and headed for cabin.

After a good night’s sleep, I woke up and went for a run around the island- it took me about 3 mins to do a lap around the perimeter. There are six cabins on the island, including Kathy”s, and this meant that I was running through five different family’s front yards every 3 minutes at 9 in the morning on a Sunday. I did 15 laps and and got brief glimpses of how people were spending their mornings.

Anyways, the point is that the next morning Kathy shuttled me to a larger, neighboring island for my run. There was nobody else on this island and that fact reappy struck me as I was running. With close to 7 billion people on this planet, I was alone on an island. How cool is that?

As I was running along the perimeter, it occurred to me that this would be an ideal place to record music.

I put the idea out there and received help.

2 days later, I packed a lunch, had 2 fully charged battery packs, Kathy’s laptop w plenty of hard drive space, my m-audio 410 box, my ns-1 mic and lachlans sock as a pop-filter.

I got dropped off and setup shop

after setting up, doing a sound check and eating my lunch, I knelt on the ground and uttered the following prayer on the fly: “please help me not obsess or care if my voice is off pitch, my timing is off, my guitar is out of tune or I forget the words. Please help me find the perfection in the imperfection.”

I just got back from an open mic at El Barrio tonight. Cam and I showed up w three songs and lucked out b/c rjztv.com was there streaming the show live online
